HAPPY DESERT

HAPPY DESERT.jpg

For 20 years, artisans from Feliz Deserto, a small town on the southern coast of Alagoas, have been producing accessories using cattail straw, an aquatic plant found in floodplains, marshes, and mangroves. Approximately 20 women weave from cattail straw, a raw material little known to most people, harvested from floodplain areas. Cattail straw is somewhat similar to sugarcane straw, and the process begins with harvesting, followed by selecting the best straws, then cutting, separating, and drying them. They produce bags and wallets and have already received an order from the Cantão brand.

Shaping clay is not easy; it requires patience and creativity, virtues that are the foundation of the artisan's work. In the works of Mrs. Maria Luciene da Silva, known as Sil de Capela, one finds: caricatured faces, the daily life of the sertanejo (inhabitant of the Brazilian backlands), and characteristic figures of the interior, in which one observes the result of experiences that contribute to bringing soul and spirit to the works. Her great challenge was to succeed in a male-dominated world, and it was her art that prepared her to face it with the motto "From clay, I came. From clay, I am." Her foundation is her love for the land. Internationally recognized, her work gained space in magazines, newspapers, books, and on television. Her works have gone beyond Brazil and have appeared in several renowned galleries, such as in Mexico, Belgium, France, and Italy," said Sil, who was honored in the final chapter of the telenovela A Lei do Amor (2017), on Rede Globo.

Jason

Starting in 2015, Jasson became involved in the artisanal production circuit of the Alagoas hinterland.
In this exchange of influences, Jasson embarked on the new challenge of creating ornate chairs, inventing his own style. By fitting together twisted branches from trees typical of the Caatinga biome, reusing discarded pieces of dry wood, he proceeds to a creative and detailed composition, juxtaposing figures on the body of the furniture – humans, animals, chimeras, grotesque masks, flowers and fruits – and applying a strongly colored and often dotted paint, with contrasts that capture even the most distracted eyes.
In some cases, one notices the creation of shapes through intentionally designed gaps; in others, the filling of backrest spaces with ropes that entwine branches and figures.

Handicrafts made with Ouricuri palm straw

The palm tree, native to the Caatinga biome, is an example of sustainable raw material management, which, in addition to maintaining the local ecosystem, generates income for the community.
The weaving technique takes on very special shapes and colors with the work of the artisans of Coruripe using Ouricuri palm straw. These women produce a wide variety of objects from the straw: basketry; kitchen utensils; decorative pieces such as mandalas and lamps. The artisans produce the objects and also dye the straw.
The tradition of weaving with this straw, this knowledge constitutes a legacy that has been passed down from generation to generation, as many children who accompanied their mothers are now artisans themselves. Thus, the work of the artisans of Coruripe is essential for the environment and for future generations.

This craft is characterized by its diversity, due to the variety of materials found in nature: fibers, wood, coconut seeds, clay, iron, and leather, which, combined with threads and fabrics, are transformed into precious items in the hands of our artisans.
