ARTISANAL EXTRACTION OF MASSUNIM

Cata do Maçunim — a living tradition of the northeastern coast

During low tides on the southern coast of Alagoas, in the municipality of Barra de São Miguel, an ancestral tradition delights residents and visitors: the Cata do Maçunim, the popular name for the artisanal extraction of this small mollusk found in the sands and mangroves of the region.

More than just a means of livelihood, the practice reveals popular wisdom, harmony with nature, and cultural identity, passed down from generation to generation. Men and women walk along the damp sand, attentive to the signs of the tide, in a ritual that unites work, tradition, and belonging.

Participating in this experience is to immerse yourself in the soul of the Northeast, learn about sustainable practices, and savor seafood harvested and prepared on the spot, in a truly authentic sensory experience.

Cata do Maçunim is more than just fishing; it's culture, history, and poetry of the sea.
