The Serra da Barriga, the main site of the famous Quilombo dos Palmares, now declared a Historical Heritage of Brazil, is about 6 km from the current town of União dos Palmares. As it is the birthplace of Jorge de Lima, the prince of Alagoas poets, it dedicates a museum to his memory, the Casa Jorge de Lima. After a city tour of União dos Palmares, we head towards Serra da Barriga where we find the Quilombo dos Palmares memorial. A visit to the Muquém community, quilombola remnants, 5 km from the city center, where you can find various handicrafts produced by the quilombola community that lives there. The Osvaldo Timóteo Ecological Reserve – located on the Santa Maria Farm, near the urban area of São José da Laje, in Alagoas (BR 104, Km 17) – is an area dedicated to the reforestation and conservation of the Atlantic Forest. It is designed for ecology enthusiasts, offering a unique feature of the region with its Atlantic Forest, bamboo grove corridor, freshwater springs, lakes, and area dedicated to the preservation of endangered birds.
